What are three requirements for calculating heat loss?

Design temperature, U value, and area

Heat loss through a building surface is determined by three things that directly feed into the standard conduction formula: the rate at which heat passes per degree of temperature difference (the U value), the area through which the heat flows, and the driving temperature difference between inside and outside (in design calculations this is the design indoor temperature minus the design outdoor temperature). Put simply, heat loss = U × A × ΔT. The design temperature pair gives a consistent ΔT for planning, the U value characterizes how well the building element resists heat transfer, and the area is how much surface is available for heat to pass.

The other options introduce factors not used in this basic calculation. Surface color doesn’t set how much heat transfers in conduction, humidity isn’t a factor in the standard steady-state heat-loss equation, and insulation thickness alone isn’t a direct input unless you’re converting it to a U value for the element (thickness affects U, but you don’t use thickness as a separate factor in the simple formula).
